A new era of specialist care – with the facilities to match.
In response to a state-wide increase in mental health, Alcohol and Other Drug-related admissions, Sunshine Hospital is one of six sites funded by the Victorian Government to develop a dedicated mental health and AOD hub, set to open in 2022.
Our Emergency Department’s brand new $5.3 million facility will include the Behavioural Assessment Unit – a six-bed ward for high-acuity patients, offering dedicated patient centred care in a specialised environment – and The Hub, operates 24/7 for clients presenting with mental health, AOD and psychosocial issues. Having these brand new purpose built areas within the Emergency department will enable great access to personalised care to patients who need it most.
After leaving the hub, patients will be linked in with community-based or in-patient care. The mental health and AOD clinicians located within the Hub will also provide expert clinical advice across the whole of the Emergency Department, assessing in-patients for correlating conditions, and assisting them in an environment purpose-built to meet their needs.
Joining Western Health’s emergency team means you’ll get the chance to shape our new hub’s model of care – all while providing life-changing support to some of our most critical patients in a new, world-class facility.

Our community is dealing with more mental health and substance-related conditions than ever before. The new AOD and mental health hub at Western Health will help us fight the stigma associated with these illnesses, and make sure that every patient at Sunshine Hospital – no matter what they initially present with – has their mental health, alcohol and other drug-related needs met whilst in our care.
Never stop challenging yourself.
Each day in our Emergency Department brings something new – new people, new experiences, and new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Working in our new mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub will be a challenging but deeply rewarding experience – providing essential, specialist care to some of our most vulnerable patients. You’ll be part of a passionate and supportive team, picking up essential on-the-job skills in a world-class clinical environment.
The new facility will employ a truly multidisciplinary approach, requiring:
- Emergency doctors
- Emergency Registered Nurses
- Associate Nurse Unit Managers (ANUMs)
- Allied Health Professionals, such as Social Workers, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists
